Dr. Jacek Kopec
Dr. Kopec is an international authority on disability and quality of life assessments, and his survey on disability levels among back pain sufferers is used by researchers worldwide.
Dr. Kopec earned his Doctor of Medicine and Diploma in Public Health (Social Medicine) from the Pomeranian Medical University in Szczecin , Poland . He spent a year as a Medical Officer with Elim Hospital in South Africa before immigrating to Canada in 1986. Two years later he earned a Master of Science in Epidemiology from the University of Toronto and, in 1994, completed a Doctorate (PhD) in Epidemiology/ Biostatistics from McGill University in Montreal, P.Q.
Following his PhD, Dr. Kopec conducted post-doctoral work with the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Program, a clinical trials cooperative group supported by the National Cancer Institute and headquartered in Pittsburgh, Penn. He continues with the program as a member of the Behavioural and Health Outcomes Committee.
Prior to joining the Arthritis Research Centre and the University of British Columbia 's Department of Health Care and Epidemiology as an Assistant Professor in 2000, Dr. Kopec was an Assistant Professor, Public Health Sciences, at the University of Toronto for five years. He is currently an Associate Professor with the University of British Columbia's Department of Health Care and Epidemiology.
Dr. Kopec's very significant scholastic achievements have been recognized with the Dean's Honour Roll at McGill University, two Student Fellowships from Health Canada's National Health Research and Development Program, the National Health Research Scholar Award from Health Canada/CIHR, the Arthritis Research Centre.
