Chen, Simon - Abstract

2009 Round 2
Conference: Society of Neuroscience 2009, Chicago, IL

My PhD project is designed to examine the structural change of brain neurons in model autism in vivo.  Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are neuro-developmental disorders characterized by impairments in social interactions, language development and emotion reactivity.  We found the expression of autism-associated proteins, neuroligins, in brain neurons significantly decreases the filopodia density and produces a simple and less complex dendritic arbour.  This may suggest that the neurons are incapable of making proper connections with other neurons in the brain.
