2008 Round 2

During my graduate studies I have been fortunate to participate in several conferences thanks to the Trainee Conference Support from the DHRN.  In my Master’s research I have been studying cardiovascular function after spinal cord injury (SCI).  Working in an experimental research laboratory can sometimes leave you feeling rather removed from the true clinical reality of SCI.  Attending this clinically-focused SCI conference, which is held as a joint meeting with physiotherapists, nurses and research scientists, reminded me of the clinical importance of cardiovascular research. The health care professionals, who work with individuals with SCI on a day-to-day basis, provided unique and practical insights regarding the quality of life of their clients, and how this can be tied to their cardiovascular dysfunction.  I learned about how important milestones in rehabilitation, including participating in physiotherapy and recreation and reintegrating into community and work life, can partly be dependent individuals’ cardiovascular function.

During the poster sessions, I enjoyed presenting my poster to a wide range of researchers and health professionals.  I found the informal discussions regarding the next steps to take with my research helpful.  Also, I feel like I was able to explain the role of animal models of autonomic function after SCI to several people who had not considered their important contribution to SCI research and the SCI community.  Finally, participation in this conference, and the opportunity to hear a number of leaders in the field present their work, gave me ideas for future research possibilities.  I have since pursued some of these ideas and have encountered some success looking at how metabolism can change as a result of SCI.
