2009 Round 2 International Award

I attended the IX conference of the International Society of Quality of Life studies in Florence, Italy from July 19 to 23, 2009. Three hundred and seventy attendees from 44 countries were present at this conference. There were 84 regular sessions, 9 symposiums, 5 seminars/workshops and 3 plenary sessions. I got to meet and chat with several presenters who were also from Canada and others who came from different European countries and Asia. I attended a workshop led by Dr. Bruno Zumbo, a professor from UBC, who spoke on contemporary psychometrics for quality of life research. That was especially inspiring. The plenary speeches were excellent. The topics were related to measuring and promoting quality of life, and well-being, quality of life and happiness. Another great symposium I attended was on “The Canadian Index of Wellbeing”, an approach meant to measure wellbeing in 8 domains of life:  health, living standards, environment, time use, education, community vitality, civic engagement, art, culture and recreation. My presentation on “Longitudinal Analysis of Balance Confidence in Stroke Survivors” was well received.  Among the audience were a physiotherapist from Portugal and an occupational therapist from Canada. I felt that attending this conference was a great experience for me in terms of my own learning as a graduate student.
