2009 Round 3

I am an interdisciplinary MA student at University of British Columbia Okanagan. With the support of the DHRN, I presented a paper at the Advances in Qualitative Methods (AQM) Conference in Vancouver during October 2009.

My area of study is in the emerging field of visual arts and adult with intellectual disabilities other than from a therapeutic or rehabilitative perspective. The area of intellectual disabilities is under researched as a whole and presents unique challenges in regards to ethics. In order to promote more research with and for this population, it is necessary to address these challenges within the research community; the AQM conference was an ideal opportunity to do this. I met a number of other individuals engaged in various forms of disability themed qualitative research. It was exciting to meet scholars from the UK, Israel, Scandinavia, China, New Zealand and the US, for example, and be able to discuss common interests and concerns.

I was pleased to find that there was a good response to my presentation in both attendance and comments. There was particular interest in the examples of pictorial consent forms that I displayed on PowerPoint. In addition to the conference, I was able to participate in an excellent "early bird" workshop on the use of video in qualitative research. I am currently using video in my data collection, as well as for dissemination, and would like to continue to make use of this method. There were also some very good presentations on arts-based methods, which I find of great interest. I would like to thank the DHRN for helping to make it possible for me to attend and take part in the AQM Conference.
